...Doctor of Philosophy, abbreviated Ph.D. or PhD for the Latin , meaning "teacher of philosophy", (or, more rarely, D.Phil., for the equivalent ) is an advanced academic degree awarded by universities. In many, but not all countries in the English-speaking world, it has become the highest degree one can earn (but see also the Higher doctorates awarded by universities in the UK, Ireland and some Commonwealth countries) and applies to graduates in a wide array of disciplines in the sciences and humanities. The Ph.D. has become a requirement for a career as a university professor or researcher in many fields. Read full entry

That depends on whether or not you get a Masters degree first. My brother went Bachelors, Masters and then PhD but both of my sisters went straight from bachelors into PhD programs. (I stopped with Masters degrees after bachelors) Bachelors - usually 4 years Masters - usually 1 to 3 years depending on field of study PhD - 3 to 5 years, depending on field of study. Hope that helps! |

Go to your local library. You know the place: its got lots of books. See if they have a reference book called "The college blue book" Its published by Macmillan. One of the volumes lists every major and every college that offers it and at which level. I don't know how good this site is but you may want to give it a try. It took me almost 20 seconds to Google: http://www.a2zcolleges.com/Maj ors/ Best of luck |

How valuable is a PhD versus a I am currently working on my
PhD in chemistry and I am
planning to go to law school
afterwards to get my law
degree to eventually work in
patent law. Is it worth the
extra 2-3 years to get my PhD
before I move on to law school
or would a Masters degree get
me the same job? Thanks

I would think a master's level degree would be sufficient for patent law. I had a friend in law school with a master's degree in engineering who went into patent law and did quite well for herself. I think it's more important to go to a good law school, other things being equal, than to have a Ph.D. Good luck, Dana (attorney) |
