Questions/Answers
Lasik surgery?
If I have done lasik surgery on both eyes, is flying still a career for me?
Depends on what kind of flying, and what country you're in. For military flying, maybe-maybe not. LASIK is not an acceptable form of surgical correction in some militaries. Commercially you should be fine. HOWEVER: a not uncommon side effect of LASIK is weak night-vision or even nightblindness. Either of which might disqualify you.
How come the doctors whoperform lasik surgery stillwear glasses?
Someone said to me, "if lasik surgery is so effective, then how come the doctors doing it still wear glasses? Why don't they get it done too?" So now I am wondering the same thing.
Do some reading up on the possible complications associated with the surgery, and you can pretty much figure it out. Although it's not a high percentage, some folks experience halos and double vision afterwards. It also increases the likelyhood you will need bifocals later on. Opthamologists make their living using their eyes, and they aren't likely to take any chances with messing them up. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's not a good option for other folks, but it could end their careers- so they stick with glasses. It's not much different than a singer with a deviated septum electing not to have the nose job because it will change how their voice sounds. For you or I, that's not a big deal. But when you make your living as an opera star- well, that's a different story. You aren't going to do anything you don't absolutely have to do, because it could mean an end to your career. Opthamologists take pretty much the same view of lasik surgery.
How long after the Lasiksurgery cna you wear contacts?
I had the Lasik surgery a few months ago and yeah, my vision is fine and I don't need to wear them for vision anymore but I want to wear color contacts once in a while. How long after the procedure can I wear them? I've heard from my doctor that if I wore contacts before the procedure I should be able to wear them again afterwards. My next appointment with him is in another 6 months so I'd like to know when I can wear them again from maybe people who've had experience with this.
Well, being that your cornea might be a different shape after lasik, I would call the doctor and tell him you want to wear non-corrective, (prescription...even without a correction these colored lenses are prescriptive!) lenses for color. They might need to re fit you for sizes and see what ones are best for you and their availability. Do not go by what people in here tell you, their answer might not be what is right for you!
