Hi Megan Oh Jorge Luis Borges is a fascinating writer. If you like Emma Zunz, then I'm pretty sure that you'll love other short stories by him... These resources should help: http://deeblog.squarespace.com /journal/2008/1/3/emma-zunz.ht ml http://socoloca.wordpress.com/ 2006/12/26/emma-zunz/ |

There is common agreement that this tale is very different from all other works by Borges. (Borges claimed that the plot was created by Cecilia Ingenieros.) Interestingly, this is his only female protagonist! The names of the characters offer a lot of symbolic significance. The allusions to the treatment of Jews and to women (and Jewish women) in South America are most relevant. For more in depth understanding, see if your library has Ilan Stavans' analyses of Borges' work; for example, http://www.amazon.com/Emma-Zun z-Jewish-theodicy-Borges/dp/B0 0072O9K8 http://muse.jhu.edu/login?uri= /journals/modern_judaism/v023/ 23.1stavans.html Meanwhile, the following 2 links will provide more than enough symbolism for several projects. "'Emma Zunz' as Endgame" by Céline Roos " . . . this tale is built as a sequence of chess moves ending in checkmate." http://www.themodernword.com/b orges/borges_papers_roos.html "True Lies: Metaphysical games in Borges’ 'Emma Zunz' ” http://www.charis.wlc.edu/publ ications/symposium_spring02/po rinsky.pdf Good luck! |
