Martin Luther defended his theses during a trial in Worms. Protestant reformers refer to the "Diet of Worms." Worms was also one of the three places of Jewish Talmudic studies before the Holocaust. Mainz and Speyer, along with Worms, made up a triad of Jewish studies, had gorgeous synagogues, and many rabbis from all over Europe. Penguin is also right. In the Nibelungenlied ("The Lay of the Nibelungen" in English) Kriemhild and the "Burgundians" are from the kingdom of Worms. But Xanten (lower Rhine) and Hungary play just a big a role in that epic. |

The best resource for you would be the Red Cross' Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center. According to their mission: "The American Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center accepts tracing requests concerning European civilians separated from their family due to the events of World War II and its aftermath, 1933-1957." http://www.redcross.org/servic es/intl/holotrace/index.html You and your sister fit that definition. I'd give them a try. They have access to records (including orphanages and immigration records) that the rest of us can't access because of privacy laws...and they're a completely free service. |

Do you mean sapper J H Owen 457722 Died Died 03/10/1918 at the age of 32 grave reference "Screen Wall" at Worms Cemetery. The last 3 month of the 1st WW was the last gasp, the final putsch of the German army to break through the Allies many allies were taken prisoner in insanitary conditions and the Spanish influenza epidemic was at its height. Influenza killed as many as bullets that year.In Britain 200,000 died; in France more than 400,000.While World War I didn't cause the flu, the close quarters and mass movement of troops quickened its spread. It has been speculated that the soldiers' immune systems were weakened by the stresses of combat and chemical attacks, increasing their susceptibility to the disease. |
