The Answer is C. The WHO, assisted by the University of Wisconsin, published a report in December 2000 that stated the annual number of deaths per year attributed to climate change was 150,000. In arriving at this figure, the researchers found that in the preceding 30 years there has been 4.5 million deaths caused by climate change, the figure of 150,000 being an average. They also found that there had been approx 165 million cases of people having been affected by illness and disease as a result of climate change - an average of 5.5 million a year, a figure which has subsequently been revised to 10 million a year due to accelerated global warming. The figures were taken from a 30 year period between 1970 and 1999, the median year being 1985. Effectively, the figures are 22 years out of date. With totals expected to double in 30 years it's probable that current figures are in the order of 250,000 deaths and 17.5 million illnesses a year. |
