...The Winter Olympic Games are a winter multi-sport event held every four years. They feature winter sports held on snow or ice, such as Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, bobsledding and ice hockey. Cross-country skiing, figure skating, ice hockey, Nordic combined, ski jumping, and speed skating have been competed at every Winter Olympics since 1924. Other athletic events have been added as the Games have progressed. Some of these events, such as luge, short track speed skating, and freestyle skiing have earned a permanent spot on the Olympic programme. Others, like speed skiing, bandy, and skijöring have been demonstration sports but never incorporated officially as an Olympic sport. Read full entry

Why has Panama never been in Panama has appeared in 12
Summer Games. They have never
appeared in the Winter Games.

It's not that they can't train for the Olympics. Lake Placid opens up their venues on the Summer where the public bobsled take place on wheels as well as skiing. The ski jumping takes place in a large swimming pool. The reason is because these cultures never grow up with Winter Sports so it doesn't occur to them to bobsled or ski. It isn't that they can't train it's because the people don't grow up around the winter sports. |

How does the IOC determine the I know that cities around the
world bid for the chance to
host the games. Toronto lost
out to Beijing for Summer
2008. Vancouver, British
Columbia won the bid for
Winter 2010 over Andorra la
Vella, Harbin, Jaca and
Sarajevo. London, Madrid, New
York, Moscow and Paris were
all vying for Summer 2012, and
London won.
But what are the IOC's
deciding factors?

Yes. Capability. Can they build it? Can they build it in time? Will the accommodation be good? What about public transport? Safety and Security? General Local acceptance? There is a lot of qualifying factors. There is a bid form on the IOC website, and you can see all the criteria a city must satisfy there. http://www.olympic.org |
