Where could I find anyinformation about soldiers inwar 1812, and 1835 in Canada?
I recently learned while researching my family tree that my gggg granfather was a soldier in the war of 1812. He was at Fort Malden and died in 1813 from an illness caused by wounds he received in the battle at River Raisin. All I found was from Olive Tree.com was that his wife received a pension. His son was a soldier in 1835.I can't find any information about him. Any suggestions? I'd like to find where they were buried and any other details about them.
If you want to email his name to me, I have access to a Canadian military database which includes War of 1812 records. I'd be happy to run it and see what I can find for you. BTW, the odds of finding a burial place is slim. I'm about 45 minutes from the battle sight and there aren't any cemetaries in the area that hold bodies from 1812. A little more looking and I found this from Monroe County. It's a very sad aftermath. http://www.co.monroe.mi.us/mon roe/default.aspx?PageId=274
Why is the war of 1812 soimportant in the building ofAmerica?
Why is the war of 1812 so important in the building of America?
The real, real answer: The War of 1812 is also called America's Second War for Independence. Before the war most nations, including the British, believed that the US would some day be reconquered by Great Britain and brought back under the Union Jack. Thus many nations refused to sign treaties with the US in fear of angering Britain. Also, the British were NOT arming the natives to protect their rights. They were doing so because Great Britain wanted to regain control of the old Northwest Territories, especially Michigan (which had the wealthiest fur industry in the world and the cities of Mackinac and Detroit controlled the Great Lakes). If the Northwest Territories filled with American citizens, it would be nearly impossible to someday retake the area. By fighting to a standstill with the British (the world's most powerful nation), the US proved to the world that they were an independent nation. The war did lead to a sense of nationalism that remained until the Civil War.
Differences between theAmerican Revolutionary War andthe War of 1812?
I'm curious. I'm not expert on the War of 1812, and I am wondering, what was the difference in military strategy? Did they still line up and shoot at each other in 1812? Or did the tactics change? What other differences were there between the two wars?
In the War of 1812, the Americans actually fought in the water too. In the Revolutionary war, Americans didn't have the naval capabilities and relied on the French and the Spanish when they joined the war. This time though, they would fight in the water, taking over ships and doing hit-and-runs like bombarding vessels or stealing the British's "prizes." One problem the British had in the first one was, it had naval but not enough land people and 90% of that war was fought on land. In 1812, they were able to blockade goods coming to America but America still fought on even though they had no money for this war or the man power.
