Many people were persecuted and killed for their religions, and after the third century, it was the Christians doing most of the persecuting and killing. According to Josephus, there were a lot of ignorant people willing to run off and die whenever a poser Messiah popped out of the woodwork. Jesus and his followers were not unique in any way for that time period.
