...Venice (Italian: Venezia, IPA: /ve'nεttsia/, Venetian: Venesia) is a city in northern Italy, the capital of the region Veneto, a population of 271,367 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Together with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000). The city historically was an independent nation. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light". Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man". Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities.http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/holiday_type/breaks/article1936951.ece Read full entry

How do we get from Venice to We're planning a trip to Italy
from 30 Dec '09 - 6 Jan 2010.
So we basically only have 1
week and we're planning on
seeing Venice and the 5
villages at Cinque Terre. Any
advice on how many days we
should spend at each place?

The best way to travel between the two is by train. However, the winter train schedules won't be published until early December. When they are available, you'll be able to find them here: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/ v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce141 14bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRC RD January is not a particularly good time to visit Cinque Terre. It will be cold and if the weather is bad, you won't be able to get out on the trails. Some shops, restaurants and accomodations will be closed since it's a seasonal destination. If you do go see Cinque Terre anyway, I would spend more time in and around Venice - there are more things you can do indoors in the event of rain or snow or fog. It's also possible that you'll see some flooding in Venice, but that isn't a big deal usually. The water goes out with the tide. There are interesting day trips on the train including Padova, Verona, or Treviso. There's a huge exhibition of presepi (nativity scenes) from around the world in the old Roman colosseum in Verona that will still be there in early January. FYI, the 6th of January is a holiday here. There's an interesting regatta in Venice on the 6th where the rowers dress as witches. |

How did Venice come to power How did Venice come to power
and influence in the arts of
the late fifteenth century?
Briefly discuss this city

I think Venice was a major power long before the 15th century. It controlled the Adriatic coast by AD 1000. The Venetians were the leading ship operators in the Mediterranean. During the Crusades, the Venetians traded with both sides as well as profiting from the transport of pilgrims. They participated in the sack of Constantinople in 1204 and were rewarded with the lion's share of the new Latin empire. The period from 1260 to 1380 reflected the transition from Byzantine rule to the Venetian Imperial Age. |
