Ukrainian language...?
I was curious if any more
linguistically experienced
people out there could answer
this for me. Is the Ukrainian
language more similar to
Polish or Russian? Any reasons
or brief explanations would be
appreciated also.

Ukrainian, like Russian and Belorussian, is an Eastern Slavic language, so it is much closer to Russian. Many linguists consider the three to be divergent dialects of a single language. Poland, however, controlled Ukraine for centuries, so there are many Polish loanwords in Ukrainian, including the words for "yes", "understand", "love", "thank you", etc. Writing systems mean nothing to language relationships. Serbian and Croatian are the same language, but use different writing systems. The same is true of Hindi and Urdu--they are the same language with different writing systems. Polish is a Northwestern Slavic language with Kashubian and Polabian. It is a different language and no speaker of Russian, Belorussian, or Ukrainian can understand it without learning it as another language. |

What's the difference between Is Ukrainian based off of
Russian? is it very similar
like how America and England
speak English but use some
different terms and have
different accents? I'm just
kind of curious...I don't know
much about it and I didn't
really understand what some of
the websites I looked on,
meant.

First answerer makes false statement when they state that Ukrainian and Russian use same alphabet. We use similar alphabet but certainly not same! NO, Ukrainian is not "dialect" of Russian, this is Moskal propaganda and extension of their revisionist history that most Western lemmings will believe, knowing no better. This topic is too complex to discuss here, you can easily research this if you are serious about obtaining the knowledge but simple answer is no, Ukrainian is certainly not "dialect" of Russian and ethnic Ukrainians are NOT Russians. |
