What is the origin of thetypographic practice ofraising "O" with a mark underit?
I am curious as to the origins of the creative typographic practice of setting an "O" in a word smaller, raised above the baseline and with some sort of mark under it. Examples include the "O" in the ITC Rennie Mackintosh and Willow fonts. I have seen it in other places, such as the new logo for the El Torito restaurant chain, and on a Nikola Tesla commemorative T-shirt. Why is the "O" and no other character singled out for this treatment?
More than likely it is just a decorative style. I have also seen C's in lower case and raised with a line under them in names such as McIntyre... some of the older typewriters I used had this also on there. I would think it would be similar to the numbers 0 and 7 having a slash thru them or the z having a slash thru it. Cultural or decorative styles is my answer.
