How do I improve my vocaltimbre?
I want to improve the timbre of my voice a little. I personally think that I sound a little on the nasally side a lot of the time. Is there a way I can practice opening my nasal passages as I sing or something? Would it help to clear mucus? If so how? I'm sorry if this question sounds dumb, I'm a percussion student lol.
Singing should have nothing to do with your nasal passages at all. The only time you ever use them is for breathing and the occasional French nasal vowel. Unfortunately though, nasal singing is a habit that many people develop. Now you're going to hate me for this because you'll look like an idiot, but trust me, I've been here before. You need to sing while pinching your nose shut. Yes, I'm serious. What this does, is it stops any air before it is able to resonate in your nasal passages. So sing a sustained pitch and pinch your nose on and off. If you are singing properly, you will hear no change in sound as you pinch your nose shut. Simply put, nasal singing has no place in any style of singing. There is nothing good that comes from it. And once you have gotten used to singing without your nose, you can focus more on other more advanced aspects of timbre.
