Thomas Jefferson is historically significant as the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. The ideas he expressed about the equality of man under God and the right of men to be able to persue the life they choose are a synthesis of the political thinking of the French and English philosophers of the Age of Reason, but expressed so simply and clearly that we still use Jefferson's phrases today to articulate what we mean by "equality," "freedom," and "liberty." Jefferson was also the third President of the United States. He more than doubled the land area of the nation by purchasing the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon. By promptly sending the Lewis and Clark expedition into that territory, he established and solidified American claims on lands right to the Pacific coast of the continent. Jefferson also served as governor of the Commonwealth of Virgina, was Secretary of State of the United States, the nation's second Vice President and the second U.S. Ambassador to France, where he witnessed the French Revolution. A polymath, Jefferson was an amateur inventor and architect. In his later years he founded the University of Virginia and designed the very distinctive buildings that frame its quadrangle. He died in near poverty, in the home he designed, "Monticello," on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. |
