...The term theory has two broad sets of meanings, one used in the empirical sciences (both natural and social) and the other used in philosophy, mathematics, logic, and across other fields in the humanities. There is considerable difference and even dispute across academic disciplines as to the proper usages of the term. What follows is an attempt to describe how the term is used, not to try to say how it ought to be used. Read full entry

Theory!,,,,,,,,,,,?
Could some one EXPLAIN Social
exchange theory in simple
words/english!
also...an example from
movies?(such as
Incredibles...etc)

In the movie Jerry Maguire the social exchange theory can easily be applied to the relationship between Jerry Maguire and the football player Rod Tidwell. When Rod decided to sign with Jerry, he thought that the benefits from having an agent that was on a personal level would end up outweighing signing with a major agent firm. He figured that he would end up being a little fish in a big pond. Time passed and Rod had not recieved any offers for the contracts that he had been hoping for. He started to reevaluate his relationship with Jerry. Rod started to believe that he made the wrong decision because the costs were outweighing the rewards. Social behavior is an exchange of goods, material goods but also non-material ones, such as the symbols of approval or prestige. Persons that give much to others try to get much from them, and persons that get much from others are under pressure to give much to them. This interaction between two actors (people, firms etc.) results in various contingencies, where the actors modify their resources to each others expectations. |

What is a theory and what is a In response to my earlier
question about evolution and
global warming, I read answers
that both are theories. My
question is, what is a theory?
Is it not what does not have
evidence/ proof yet, but can
be tested? In that regard,
Evolution simply CANNOT be a
theory, since it has proof
enough that it exists and
happens. Creationism or the
existence of God's design can
be a "theory" at best. Global
warming also to the best of my
knowledge has become a "fact"
rather than a theory, looking
at the melting of the ice caps
in the polar regions. Or does
we need actual changes from a
monkey population to a human
population for evolution to be
deemed a fact? Then again
people will call it a
"Miracle" of creation!

There really is no such thing as a scientific fact. For example, there is a theory that says the Earth revolves around the Sun. It's held up until now, time and time again. But that doesn't mean it's graduated from a theory. One day the Earth will not revolve around the Sun and the theory will be disproved. |

What is the best music theory Unfortunately, my school does
not offer AP Music Theory.
However, I will be taking the
AP Music Theory Exam next
year. Instead of being put in
an AP class, my guidance
counsilor is putting me in an
independent study class where
I will be studying on my own.
I have a basic knowledge of
music theory. I have looked
for many places for a more
advanced theory book and
worksheet that I could check
my work on. What book do you
recommend I use for preparing
for this exam?

Some of the material covered in the course involves advanced sight reading, in-depth terminology, musical phrasing and composition, music history, chord structure and cadences, and other areas of music theory.
