...Tailgate is an American English word denoting the door or 'gate' at the back of a wagon, pickup truck, SUV or other similar type of vehicle that is hinged at the bottom and can be opened for the convenience in loading cargo into the rear of the vehicle. A similar vehicular feature, the hatch, hatchback or liftgate, is a door at the back of a vehicle that is hinged at the top and opens upward. In modern usage, the word tailgate may refer to a true tailgate, a hatchback or a lateral opening door (hinged on the left or right side) in the back of a pickup truck, wagon or SUV. Read full entry

Most parts stores have a display with a bunch of random stuff just like that. I believe it's a red package that says HELP on it (seriously) |

How do I open tailgate if the I have a '99 S10 that I just
broke off the tailgate handle.
I have a cover on the truck
that can't open unless I open
the tailgate first, so I can't
get inside to unscrew anything
on the tailgate. Any
suggestions on how to open
from the outside?

Is a GM Sierra's tailgate I need to take my new tractor
lawn mower to have service at
the end of summer. I do not
have a trailer for it, and I
was planning to use the back
of my truck to carry the
lawnmower to the dealership.
Will the tailgate be strong
enough to support the weight
of the lawnmower without
damaging it? If not, are there
ramps for sell that will
distribute the weight on the
bed of the truck instead of
the tailgate? Thanks!

You shouldn't have any problems. One thing to watch out for are those speed bumps or dips in road. That will cause a pretty strong force on the tailgate if you hit them to fast. One other thing....check to see which end is the heaviest...put that part up in the bed and the lightest on the tailgate. |
