...A stock character is a stereotype. Stock characters rely heavily on cultural types or names for their personality, manner of speech, and other characteristics. In their most general form, stock characters are related to literary archetypes, but they are often more narrowly defined. Stock characters are a key component of genre fiction, providing relationships and interactions that people familiar with the genre will recognize immediately. Referring to a character as a "stock character" usually means they are a stereotype with no real dimensions. By that I mean that they are often not the main character in a drama or book, but a background character that the writer doesn't need to develop and the reader/viewer doesn't really need to get to know to enjoy the plot of the drama or book. They are stock in the sense that they are sort of off-the-peg-one-size-fits-all characters like ... the dim-witted sidekick, the feisty girl, the dithery old lady etc ... and have nothing to do with theatrical props! |
