...Stepney is an inner-city district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is located east north-east of Charing Cross and forms part of the East End of London. The area is a mix of post-war high density housing, Victorian mansion blocks and terraced housing that were not demolished during slum clearances. The east side of historic Stepney Green is notable for its architecture - Arbour Square and Sidney Square and the surrounding streets retain many Georgian and Victorian houses. Stepney is roughly bounded by Commercial Road, part of the A13, in the south, Mile End Road, part of the A11, in the north and the Regent's Canal in the east. The Western Boundary with Whitechapel is rather ambiguous. The area has not yet experienced the levels of gentrification seen in nearby Bow, Wapping and Limehouse but some redevelopment has taken place, notably with the Roger Black scheme, Stepney City [1]. The former Arbour Square Police Station and the East End Mission building are also being redeveloped. Read full entry

How is the area around Stepney I will be in London by the end
of September for my
postgraduate studies and one
of my accommodation options is
the Unite Rahere Court which
is like between Stepney Green
and Mile End stations, but
somewhere I was told that the
area is not very good to live
in, so I want to learn how bad
it is to live in that area?

How was Stepney Green during could someone tell me what the
Blitz in world war 2 was?
and how Stepney Green was like
during the Blitz

The Blitz was the daily bombing of many towns and cities of Britain by the Germans from September, 1940 until May, 1941. It began with London being bombed for 57 consecutive days. I wasn't there, but I imagine Stepney Green was quite crowded, noisey and hectic during the Blitz. (referring to the underground air raid shelters of Stepney Green) |

I think you might be thinking of Bangladeshis not Pakistanis? Anyway, it seems to me to be about 25% Bangladeshi. A bit further West and it's more like 80% (Bangladeshi) - 20% (Cockney), a bit further East, beyond Bow and I'd guess at 80% - 20% It may change again, just as two hundred years ago it was a predoinantly French Hugenot population (hence the beautiful houses just to the East of Commercial Street and then later a Jewish population who lived in the neighbourhoods around Whitechapel. As for Pakistanis, not many Pakistanis at all live around here I don't think.. |
