...Sociology is a broad discipline in terms of both methodology and subject matter. Its traditional focuses have included social stratification (i.e. class relations), religion, secularization, modernity, culture and deviance, and its approaches have included both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. As much of what humans do fits under the category of social structure and agency, sociology has gradually expanded its focus to further subjects, such as medical, military and penal organizations, the internet, and even the role of social activity in the development of scientific knowledge. The range of social scientific methods has also been broadly expanded. The linguistic and cultural turns of the mid-20th century led to increasingly interpretative, hermeneutic, and "postmodern" approaches to the study of society. Conversely, recent decades have seen the rise of new mathematically rigorous approaches, such as social network analysis. Read full entry

To a Sociologists does take about 5 to 6 years of college and then you must decide if you want a masters or go on for your PHD. The first level BA has very little to offer as a Sociologists you could work for a company and pave your own way with your degree. The next two levels will get you into teaching and reach I have found that working in any social field will help to well round you as a Sociologists you can find some student jobs on campus that will help to give the interaction that will farther your career |

It would take some research to confirm, but I would guess a combination of: 1. Overwhelming feelings of powerlessness by people who feel excluded from the mainstream; by people who are loners. 2. Greater geographical mobility and loss of kinship ties - I suppose the state of anomie to which Durkheim referred. (Being alone in a crowd; disconnected from society). 3. The emphasis on individualism; loss of a sense of community. Everyone is out to gain an advantage over the next person. Maybe some lash out because they can't compete in a culture of ruthlessness. Empathy and compassion have been devalued. 4. Media influence. 5. Extended childhoods; no experience in personal decision making or learning how to manage personal autonomy. 6. Individual cases of abuse; bullying and the like where there is no way to address it through the justice and other systems. No validation of their pain; so they lash out to even the score. |
