Questions/Answers
What parts of Africa did thevarious slave traders collectslaves from?
I have heard that there were certain parts of Africa that remained untouched by the slave trade. I know that in many cases it was Africans themselves who sold other Africans to the white slave traders. I believe that there were no slaves taken from Kenya.
European slave traders got all their slaves from west Africa because it was the closest place to the end users in the new world. Freight costs were very high. Also allot of the slaves died on the way across the Atlantic. Taking them from East Africa was just not practical. Arab slave traders did collect slaves in East Africa.
Did slaves still try to runaway during the runaway to thenorth during the civil war?
Any other information about the slaves during the civil war and how it effected them or how they particapated in the civil war.
Many slaves ran away to join the union army during the Civil War. Lincoln credited the 180,000 black union soldiers with 'helping turn the tide of the war'. The movie 'Glory' showed Denzel Washington's character was one. Slaves didn't know the outcome of the war until after it was over, so naturally some still tried to escape.
What types of people weretaken as slaves in the Arabslave trade?
I heard that most of the slaves were of East African origin, is this true? And did the Arabs mix and have intermarriages with the female slaves that they captured. I also want know where the slave markets were? Sorry about all the questions but its for my history homework.
Slaves in the Arab world were any person imprisoned during a war and kept alive to become a slave. Before the Advent of Islam, most slaves were East Africans, namely Ethiopians. Ethiopia and Arabia were arch-enemies for more than 800 years (until the advent of Islam). During the Islamic conquests, most slaves have been Persians and Romans. At that time, the slave trade flourished and slaves were sold in the Souqs of every major Islamic city (Damascus, Madinah, Baghdad, Fostat & Alexandria, Tangiers and Cordoba). Before and during the Early period of Islam, slaves served as menial laborers. During the Golden age of Islam, female slaves (Romans & Persians) were kept for service and to serve as concubines and singers/dancers. Arabic poetry even came to reflect this which described Persian and Roman beauty which differed from Arab beauty at the time. Children of slaves were free and not enslaved. Much of the mixture of races in the Arab world today is a reflection of that. You can find Arabs who are blondes, with persian features or blacks.
