...The concept of a singer–songwriter can be traced to ancient bardic culture, which has existed in various forms throughout the world. Poems would be performed as chant or song, sometimes accompanied by a harp or other similar instrument. After the invention of printing, songs would be written and performed by ballad sellers. Usually these would be versions of existing tunes and lyrics, which were constantly evolving. This developed into the singer–songwriting traditions of folk culture. Traveling performers existed throughout Europe. Thus, the folklorist Anatole Le Braz gives a detailed account of one ballad singer, Yann Ar Minouz, who wrote and performed songs traveling through Brittany in the late nineteenth century and selling printed versions.Anatole Le Braz, "The Pardon of the Singers", The Land of Pardons, London, Methuen, 1926, pp. 45–104. In large towns it was possible to make a living performing in public venues, and with the invention of phonographic recording, early singer–songwriters like Théodore Botrel and George M. Cohan became celebrities. Radio further added to their public recognition and appeal. Read full entry

How can I become an "indie" I'm fairly astute regarding
what it takes to become a
secular, independent
singer-songwriter, but how do
I break into the Contemporary
Christian genre on my own?
Will you please suggest some
websites, books, or other tips
that might be useful to me?
Thank you!
Ella G, You have given me
great, pertinent advice that
is more "modern" than what I
can find in some indie label
books. I will use your advice,
but I know that the procedure
is different (somewhat) for
"Christian" music, versus
"secular" music. I know that
there are different ways to
promote the different genres,
but I just don't know what the
methods are. That is what I'm
hoping to find out. Thanks,
though.

would say you need 4 things: 1. A passion for Christ 2. Talent 3. A lot of hard work 4. A little luck Suggestions I would say your dream is alive in well I would get in your churches or another churches praise band or doing "special music." At our church we have a solo every Sunday during the offering time. I would also suggest you start getting together with others that have the same interest and put together a Christian Band depending on the style of music you like and start playing cover tunes and writing your own stuff. Once you have some original music look for opportunities to play for either youth groups or local events like Christian Skate night at a local rink etc. Once you have enough confidence from that start looking into playing summer Christian festivals. Most have "side" stages where they have up and coming bands play. If you have a local christian radio station find out what it takes to get a song on their station to get a following. Good luck and have fun. |

www.libraryofcongress.gov Put a recorded version of your songs, along with printed lyrics and the form you download and print from that site and send them in.I think it costs upwards of $40, but you can copyright all your songs together as a collective work. It will take at least 6 months to get back a certificate of copyright, but you should be safe to post your material online sooner than that. |
