As recently as 1996 Bill Clinton carried large swaths of rural America, even in the South. Clinton even won many rural counties in Texas while losing urban Harris and Dallas counties. In just over 10 years, America has all but polarized among urban-rural lines. For all of Obama's conciliatory talk, rural America still overwhelmingly rejected him, just as surely as urban America overwhelmingly rejected McCain. So what caused it? Why does urban America now seem off limit to Republicans, and rural America out of reach for Democrats? Surely this can't ALL be because of abortion, gun rights, and gay marriage!
