Rome??????
Rome was an extremely sophisticated society. Do you believe that the fall of Rome was a set back in the development of future societies?
Rome never fell, it just transformed into a Christian Empire, and the falling of the polytheist Roman Empire was in part the result of a society given to luxury and excesses and that relayed too much on slaves.
How did Rome change from arepublic to an empire and whydid it collapse?
What factors allowed Julius Ceasar to seize control of Rome and expand its control? And do you feel that this factored into the collapse? Can you see parallels between Rome and America?
The Roman Republic's de facto end was in 83 B.C. when Lucius Cornelius Sulla invaded Rome and declared himself "Dictator to rewrite the laws and reform the Republic." This is what set the stage for Caesar's rise to power since, in 60-59 B.C., the First Triumvirate was formed between: Gnaeus Pompeius Maximus (Pompey the Great), Marcus Licinius Crassus and Gaius Julius Caesar. These three men were vying for power between each other; Crassus and Caesar went on military campaigns to expand their influence. However, Crassus died in 53 B.C. in the Middle East and Caesar conquered all of Gaul, which made him ever the more powerful. As a result, in 49-48 B.C., Caesar and Pompey fought it out in civil war, with Pompey being defeated. This is what set the stage for Caesar to take power. In 48 B.C., Caesar declared himself dictator; in 46 B.C., he declared himself "Dictator Perpetuo"/Dictator Forever. And, naturally, in 44 B.C., Caesar was assassinated. All of this contributed to the fall of Republic since this allowed Augustus to declare himself emperor in 27 B.C. There really aren't parallels between Rome & the U.S.
