Romanticism?
I posted this question a few
hours ago and I haven't gotten
a satisfactory response yet...
so here it is again:
My European history book says
that Romanticism was a "bridge
between conservatism and
liberalism." To me,
Romanticism means emotions and
freedom (liberalism), and not
very "conservative."
How does Romanticism reflect
conservatism? (in specific
ways, please)

Romanticism was a movement just after blake's time. I know this because I did blake, thus, the information will be from a literary stand point, sorry. The romantics challenged the way that society was. so yes, there is liberalism there. they were against organised religion, the monarchy, industry etc etc. however, they were conservative in the way that they wanted to go back to the simpler times, back to nature, and family bonds. also, they were not against the church as in religion but rather the corrupt nature of organised religion at that time. so it was not really society and the structure of socity that they were against, but the corruption, cruelty and inequality that those instituions came to represent. |

What seminal ideas did I have to write an informal
essay (yay) about romanticism
and other 19th century
literary movements. Here the
prompt my teacher gave me, if
anyone can give me ideas.
Thanks
Prompt: We have studied the
major literary movements of
the nineteenth century in
America: Romanticism,
Transcendentalism, and Dark
Romanticism. Explain the
seminal ideas of ONE of these
literary movements, and use
evidence from the authors we
studied in conjunction with
that movement to explain how
that literary movement had an
impact or effect on American
literature.

What is the difference between On my AP US history test
tomorrow, our teacher wants us
to read a passage and classify
it as realism, romanticism, or
transcendentalism. How can I
tell these three apart?
Thanks in advance!

1. Realism: Tells things as they really are. Not much interpretation, not run through any person filters, much like the play-by-play of a football game. 2. Romanticism: Elicits emotion and glamorizes the events. Not romantic as in candles, soft music, and good food, but romanticism as in patriotism, nationalism, or devotion to a cause 3. Transcendentalism: Refers to knowledge one has that "transcends" the senses. We all know some things even though we didn't learn it through sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell. We merely "sense" things and this knowledge "transcends" our regular senses. |
