I am not aware that "grabbing a cup of coffee" with a Romanian friend will enable you to acquire a good level in Romanian as Adela suggested. Romania originated from Latin. Rome was the capital of the Roman Empire and the ancient Romans conquered the land which they named Romania. However, because it is so near to the Balkans, it was also influenced by the Slavic languages: Russian, Polish, etc. So, although Romanian is classified w/the other Romance languages: French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, it is very different from all of them. Keep in mind that the term "romance languages," has nothing at all to do with love or romance; it's from Rome and the Romans. |
