...The Romance languages (sometimes referred to as Romanic languages, Latin languages, Neolatin languages or Neo-Latin languages) are a branch of the Indo-European language family comprising all the languages that descend from Latin, the language of ancient Rome. There are more than 600 million native speakers worldwide, mainly in America, Europe, and Africa, as well as many smaller regions scattered throughout the world. Today, there are 25 surviving Latin languages; but perhaps many more were previously in existence which evolved from local vernaculars of Latin. The six most widely spoken Romance languages are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, and Catalan. Among numerous other Romance languages are Corsican, Leonese, Occitan, Aromanian, Sardinian, Venetian and Galician. Read full entry

What is the average number of I read somewhere that in
English the average is
something like 160 words per
minute, but the number of
syllables won't be much higher
because words in English are
usually one syllable. Anyways
does anyone have the info for
this on the Romance Languages?
I've looked but I haven't
found anything like I have
with English. Thanks!

This paper, I believe, states that 214 words per minute should be the average for French. I really don't have the time to read through it all now, so check it out for yourself. ;) |

Why does the Portuguese accent Does anybody besides me think
that the Portuguese accent
sound very peculiar as
compared to the other romance
languages? With French,
Spanish and Italian, you can
at least pick up similar words
between the three by
listening, but Portuguese is
completely different. To me,
it sounds almost like some
sort of Slavic language.
Anyone know why it evolved to
sound the way it does?

It has a completely different phonology. I don't know the background for this, but the language sounds more like Russian than Spanish. However, the Brazilian accent is different, more like French. |
