...Rhodesia (), officially the Republic of Rhodesia from 1970, was an unrecognized state located in southern Africa that existed between 1965 and 1979 following its Unilateral Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965. With its government based at the former colonial capital of Salisbury, its territory consisted of the former British colony of Southern Rhodesia. The state was named after Cecil John Rhodes, whose British South Africa Company acquired the land in the nineteenth century. Read full entry

Rhodesia...?
Hi there, I am writing a short
story and I'd like one of the
characters to be a Rhodesian
ex-Soldier.
I'm aware that Rhodesia is now
no longer called so, does this
mean that white Rhodesians are
in fact becoming 'extinct',
for want of a better word, and
that after the current
generation there won't be any
more white Rhodesians as most
of them have moved away?
If this is the case, and
please excuse me if I have my
facts wrong, how old is the
current generation of white
Rhodesians- are they now
getting old?
Thanks

You should note that there once was a British colony of Southern Rhodesia and one named Northern Rhodesia. The latter became Zambia in 1964. But you probably refer to Southern Rhodesia, which in 1980 became the independent nation of Zimbabwe. The first exodus started in 1980. Mostly people went south and settled in South Africa. So, if your character is to be a former soldier in the Rhodesian army, he must have been in his twenties during the 1970s. Your character will then be pushing 60. But far from all white Rhodesians left at the time of indepence. According to the Economist, around 350 out of 4,500 white farmers are now left in Zimbabwe. Many of the white farmers who've left went to start new lives in South Africa, Mocambique, and Zambia. They - and their children - still consider themselves Rhodesian (or Zimbabwean), but the question is whether their grandchildren will. |

It had an estimated 7,000,000 in 1955 - according to the Historical Dictionary of the British Empire, by James Stuart Olson and Robert Shadle, p. 422. Sorry, the above is the best I could locate. ~~ |
