Question to those who use the Were you disappointed when the
New Revised Standard Version
(NRSV) came out? If yes, what
do you like about the older
RSV?

Well, I guess I'm too young to have been a user of the RSV, but I *have* spent a lot of time evaluating bibles. I) RSV IA Pros 1) scholarly translation 2) includes large selection of Scriptures 3) no inclusive language B) Cons 1) dated translation (lacks the last 50 years of scholarship improvements) 2) some archaisms (old-style language) retained C) Mixed 1) fairly literal II) NRSV A) Pros 1) modern translation 2) scholarly translation 3) includes large selection of Scriptures B) Cons 1) over-zealous use of inclusive language 2) lack of translator's cross references, particularly cross-references regarding quotations from other Scriptures C) Mixed 1) fairly "dynamic" (thought-for-thought instead of word-for-word) Jim, http://www.bible-reviews.com/ |

Question to those who use the Which do you prefer between
the old RSV or the NRSV ?

I don't prefer one over the other, but I happen to use the NRSV most often. There's not a whole lot of difference in them. It's good to read more than one version since translations can differ. Sometimes one gives more insight than another. Just keep reading! :-) |
