Questions/Answers
how much do I need to budgetto have my head gasket on myV-6 Ranger replaced?
Found oil in the radiator overflow container, which usually means the head gasket is gone. Have a 2000 Ford Ranger V-6 4.0 Litre engine.
Edit: This is if you want to do it yourself. Get the chilton's manual then list and price everything you need from the AutoZone or O'Reilly's website. The gasket kit will not include things like head bolts so make sure you find out what is in the gasket kit so you don't get working on it late at night and get stuck because something wasn't in the gasket kit. The basics will be headgaskets, headbolts, valve cover gaskets, Exhaust gaskets, intake manifold gaskets. While you're in there you're basically best off to replace every gasket you come across with along the way which may include: Fuel injector o-rings, thermostat and gasket. Maybe sparkplugs too. The incidental supplies will probably include RTV, LockTite, something to spray on locked up nuts and bolts (i like PB Blaster, it costs more than WD40 but is better), and brake cleander (you'll use it to clean off the block), and anti-seize that is ok for electrical stuff. Here's a list of things i'll suggest also: if it's a pushrod engine get a cardboard box (punch holes in it to drop the pushrods in and label the front of the box and each side and drivers and passenger and put the rods in the box in order relative to where they were on the engine), ziplock bags and sharpie (put all your bolts in different bags and label where they came). Another invaluable cheap thing to have is a roll of masking tape. Before you unhook any wiring or hose or anything else write what it connected to on a piece of tape and then wrap the tape around the wire so that you'll be able to see where it came from. Here's some tools you'll need: Electric drill and wire wheel or grinder and wire wheel (to clean the top of the block). Wire brush (to clean misc stuff). A tap that matches the threads of your headbolts (have the machine shop that you take your heads to for decking check a headbolt, they'll tell you, it can be an exotic size that a auto store might not be able to check for, it happened on my car). Also you may need a special fuel line disconnect. This should be less than 10 bucks. Also call a few machine shops in your area and see what they will charge you for to check and deck the heads. If you really want them to you can ask them to pressure test the heads but it will probably cost more. As a general rule don't pick the cheapest person unless the prices are about the same. I chose to go for the middle guy and had a guy that had retired from the navy after 20 years as a certified nuclear machinist and he did the greastest work, a good machinist will be willing to answer your questions. The most expensive tool you'd need will be a torque wrench. Don't go out and buy a 20 dollar torque wrench because the 20 dollar torque wrench can cost you a few hundred dollars. Either rent it or buy a Craftsman torque wrench. I suggest the micrometer click type over the bar type. If you've never messed with a torque wrench before remember to turn it back down after every use. If you leave it turned up it can cause it to become inaccurate. I've had people say it won't cause any problem but personally when i turn mine down i turn it back to zero and no further down. The craftsman torque wrenches were about 60 each. Another nice to have tool is a set of bolt-out tools to help you remove any rounded off bolts or nuts. As far as a budget this is what i can tell you. Chilton Manual- $20 Torque Wrench- $60 each (if you rent then much cheaper, be sure to read the instructions closely you may need a inch pound torque wrench for some other things.) Parts- Figure about $200 to $300 but once you get the chilton manual you'll know exactly what you need and can price it through o'reilly's or autozone's website and get it down much closer. Incidental supplies (approx)- $50 Machine work- $50-100 Cost of the oil and filter, and antifreeze plus tablets- $50 An additional note. If you have to replace your heads the cost will go up dramatically. I didn't have to replace mine but they would have cost $150 each for the bare head, and if i had the machinist transfer the valves and springs it would have cost another 120 bucks or so. All in all i think mine cost around 700 but i bought the torque wrenches broke a couple of things (lower intake manifold) and had to do it twice because the gasket didn't seat (thanks to $20 torque wrench). Hope this helps.

I want to watch Walker Texas Ranger Seasons 6 and 7 online for FREE. I don't want to pay a penny for memberships, downloads, etc. I just want to watch Walker without any payment.
