The transgressions of a priest are not unlike the transgressions of a teacher, community leader, judge, or anyone else who has, by the nature of their work, opened themselves to public scrutiny. It is assumed (perhaps falsely) that a priest or minister will be concerned enough with upright behavior to actually attempt engaging in it. The primary reason that people were so disgusted with the fall of Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker is because they had set themselves up as moral guardians. It wouldn't matter so much if Swaggart had been a regular man on the street who sought out sex for hire, but since he had appointed himself as one of America's moral guardians, he was subsequently exposed as a hypocrite. No one should order people to stop engaging in certain behavior patterns if he's doing the exact same thing in secret. |
