John 21:15-17 states: When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep. Matthew 16:17-19 states: Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock. The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter. The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing. What would happen if a sitting Pope John Paul II said that
only men could ordained, and
that it is impossible for a
women to become a Priest.
So what if tomorrow the Pope
made a public statement saying
that God told him that women
could indeed become Priests?
What would happen?
Would the Pope be overruled by
the Cardinals or something
like that?

Pope Eugene and the Council of Florence in 1441 said that "not only pagans, but also Jews, heretics and schismatics" will go straight to hell unless before the end of their lives they are joined to the Catholic Church -- "It firmly believes, professes, and proclaims that those not living within the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics cannot become participants in eternal life, but will depart “into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels” [Matt. 25:41], unless before the end of life the same have been added to the flock; and that the unity of the ecclesiastical body is so strong that only to those remaining in it are the sacraments of the Church of benefit for salvation, and do fastings, almsgiving, and other functions of piety and exercises of Christian service produce eternal reward, and that no one, whatever almsgiving he has practiced, even if he has shed blood for the name of Christ, can be saved, unless he has remained in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church. (Cantate Domino)" Then in 1965, the Second Vatican Council said that Jews, Hindus, Muslims, and certainly Protestants (who used to be called heretics and schismatics) may be saved without becoming Catholics. I guess, given enough time, traditional Church teachings can be changed -- as long as people don't notice it and make too much of a fuss. By the way, I think Pope Eugene and the Council of Florence were wrong. EDIT: So, "No Fixed Address", are you saying there were no Jews and no pagans in 15th century Europe or in the world of that time? Think again. And you are wrong to call me a liar simply because your pope made such a colossal blunder. EDIT 2: And by the way, "No Fixed Address", I think the Spanish and Portuguese Empires may have had something to do with making the Catholic Church so big. But in earlier centuries, there were more Christians in Asia than there were in union with Rome -- and they were Orthodox and Nestorians, not Roman Catholics. |

How come the Pope doesn't They say whatever the pope
binds on earth is bond in
heaven. So, why doesnt the
Pope allow all men, both great
and small, to have the power
to forgive men of every sin
like the bishops of the church
do?
phoenix are you married?
how have you not heard that
before?
Oh, I was just wondering. ^_^
but it would matter if someon
like Billy Graham did. See. :)
He should issue a decree.
Because the year of Paul is
over, I only ascended to the
greatest heights in the
teachings of Paul.
So now that his year is over,
so is the second part to my
name. :)

Binding/loosing on earth/heaven has to to with church discipline and is not exclusive to the Bishop of Rome but to the leaders of the church everywhere. To bind means to forbid or be unlawful and to loose is to allow or be lawful. This Apostolic authority is only valid when used in submission to Christ's word or teaching. It does not give the church the authority to make up new teachings later in church history. Forgiving sin is a separate matter altogether. Only God can forgive sin. Jesus has the authority to forgive sins because He is the divine Son, He is God in the flesh, Immanuel, but the Pope is just a man and man is not authorised to forgive sin. |
