- the copying of someone's ideas, text or other intellectual property and claiming it at one's own
...Plagiarism, as defined in the 1995 Random House Compact Unabridged Dictionary, is the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work."qtd. in Within academia, plagiarism by students, professors, or researchers is considered academic dishonesty or academic fraud and offenders are subject to academic censure, up to and including expulsion. In journalism, plagiarism is considered a breach of journalistic ethics, and reporters caught plagiarizing typically face disciplinary measures ranging from suspension to termination of employment. Some individuals caught plagiarizing in academic or journalistic contexts claim that they plagiarized unintentionally, by failing to include quotations or give the appropriate citation. While plagiarism in scholarship and journalism has a centuries-old history, the development of the Internet, where articles appear as electronic text, has made the physical act of copying the work of others much easier. Yes, plagiarism is using someone else's words or ideas and passing them off as your own, without giving the original person credit. Yes, to my great embarrassment, I must admit I plagiarized once, back when I was in high school. The first half of the paper was my own, the second half was plagiarized. And no, I never got caught. My brother taught high school, and he was an expert at catching people at plagiarism. Once he taught me his trick, I found that I can spot it fairly easily as well. It's also like a sixth sense with any kind of teacher or professor. There's actually software that can be used to detect it. 20+ years ago, when I did it, the chances of being caught were slim. If I were in school now, I wouldn't even dream of doing it. Teachers are much more aware of the problem, and there's technology to help them out if they are in doubt. It's just too risky. Plus, it yields absolutely nothing. You get a passing grade--so what? You didn't learn anything but how to cheat. That isn't a tremendously helpful life skill. |

plagiarism is where you write word for word what someone esle has written and you do not give them credit for it. the best way around that is when you write put it in you own words and do an it text citation of where you got your information and have a referece at the end putting it in either mla or apa style for the correct format. and yes if you paraphrase somethinfg you still need to cite it if not that is a type of plagerism. i hope this helps |

What is essay plagiarism? If a I had a writing partner
personalize an alliterative
essay from a textbook. She
duplicated the essay and used
alliteration. It was all
paraphrased but the style and
tone were an exact copy of the
original. I think my partner
committed plagiarism, even
though she got an "A".
Is it okay to copy a document
style, if it's paraphrased
with one's own experiences?

well, if you are paraphrasing you admit you are using an existing source to paraphrase from; therefore you should cite the source. If not, you are plagiarizing. |
