...Pitch represents the perceived fundamental frequency of a sound.Machlis & Forney, p 8 It is one of the three major auditory attributes of sounds along with loudness and timbre. When the actual fundamental frequency can be precisely determined through physical measurement, it may differ from the perceived pitch because of overtones, also known as partials, harmonic or otherwise, in the sound. The human auditory perception system may also have trouble distinguishing frequency differences between notes under certain circumstances. According to ANSI acoustical terminology, it is the auditory attribute of sound according to which sounds can be ordered on a scale from low to high. Read full entry

How do I transcribe music I have the music and I can
sing it in my head, but I
don't have perfect or relative
pitch. What is the best way to
transcribe it?

You probably need relative pitch if you don't have an instrument. I study in a music college, and you can have a bunch of exercises to start building up your strength. You have to know the tonality of the piece and then know to hear all of the degrees. (2nd, third, fourth, 7th, etc) you can do this by giving you a C major chord, then play random notes and say in your head: Ohhhh this is the fourth, and this is how it sounds next to my tonic, C. You must never forget your tonic. With time, you'll become better and better. If you don't want this troublesome learning, just get a guitar, piano or whatever, then sing one note at a time and then play random notes until the note you play matches the sound in your head. This is long and you might change the note in your head when you play other notes. For the time, you gotta know your values of notes. You can find this on wikipedia. Also, you can use any music program like guitar pro or mixmusic thingies to get the timing right! Anyway, you might want to never write your compositions down, too. Play them enough so you remember them! Good luck! |

Where can I find a free music I want to take some pieces of
synth heavy music and slow
them down to see how they
would sound...I've tried to do
this with two different music
editing programs (Goldwave and
Flexi-something-or-other) but
I couldn't get them to leave
the pitch alone...I'd
appreciate any help with this,
thanks.

Have you tried Audacity? I haven't used it for that specific purpose ( I usually am just trimming a song and/or adjusting volume level). It would be worth a look. |
