Photoshop is the way to go, but is very pricey. If you are on a budget, I would suggest GIMP which works nearly as well and even has a Photoshop layout mod for it so it mimics the toolset and menus of Photoshop. Photoshop - $600+ Gimp - FREE |

What kind of laptop would be I want to start doing
photo-manipulation art and
other things like that, and
I'm planning to get a
top-notch digital camera soon.
I currently have the world's
worst desktop and Dell
computers seem to hate me.
What should I get?

I'd go with a Macbook Pro. Forget the anti-Apple folks. Macs are MADE for image and photo manipulation. It's not surprising that it's the machine of choice for those professionals. There are equivalent applications on Windows, but once you've tried a Mac, you'll find out that it's made for that! Not only is the software quite powerful, but the operating system facilitates that. Also, iPhoto '09 has face recognition technology built in. Very nice. Good luck! |

What can be done with photo I'm looking into some photo
manipulation softwares, and
was wondering which ones were
the best. What exactly would I
be able to do with a software
like that? Do you have any
before and after pictures of
photos that you have taken and
then changed with a software
that I could see?
Also, do you consider using a
software like that to be art.
Or do you think it's a little
like cheating?
Thanks.

There is ALMOST no limit to what can be done, though there are some things that cannot be corrected, such as excess blur or blown out highlights, or too low resolution. But if you have a reasonably sized, quality photo to begin with, you are really limited only by your desire to learn the program. These programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, are NOT easy to learn and can take years and years to even begin to call yourself a master with them. Too many people think all they have to do is put a photo in the software and it will do anything they want like magic. There is MUCH skill and time involved in doing many procedures. So as long as you understand and accept that, software such as Photoshop is a marvel of modern technology. It is NOT cheating because as I said earlier, you still have to have a photo RIGHT to begin with. If it was possible to go out and take total crap photos and then the software automatically make them perfect, yes, it would be cheating. That, however, it totally not the case. Good software is a tool to be used just like a good camera. Skill is still important, both with the camera, and afterward with the software. steve |
