Need help understanding different types of phonology such as phoneme, grapheme, phonics, phonetics? I would really like a simple but detailed definition of the words with examples that i can understand and revise from please help !
Phonology Def: the study of the sound system of a given language and the analysis and classification of its phonemes. The phonological system of a language includes an inventory of sounds and their features, and rules which specify how sounds interact with each other. Ex: found here: http://www.sil.org/linguistics /GlossaryOfLinguisticTerms/Wha tIsPhonology.htm phoneme Def: (linguistics) one of a small set of speech sounds that are distinguished by the speakers of a particular language Ex: An example of a phoneme is the /t/ sound in the words tip, stand, water, and cat. (In transcription, phonemes are placed between slashes, as here.) grapheme Def: a written symbol that is used to represent speech Ex: The alphabetic letter or letters that correspond to one particular phoneme. Examples: The grapheme 't' corresponds to the phoneme |t|; the graphemes 'c' and 's' correspond to the phoneme |s|; the grapheme 'c' also corresponds to the phoneme |k|. phonics Def: teaching reading by training beginners to associate letters with their sound values Ex: Phonics Rules The vowels are "a,e,i,o, and u"; also sometimes "y" & "w". This also includes the diphthongs "oi,oy,ou,ow,au,aw, oo" and many others. The consonants are all the other letters which stop or limit the flow of air from the throat in speech. They are: "b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,qu,r, s,t,v,w,x,y,z,ch,sh,th,ph,wh, ng, and gh". see rules listed below at the glendale url i pasted in. phonetics Def: the branch of acoustics concerned with speech processes including its production and perception and acoustic analysis Ex:For example "to, two, and too" which all have the phonetic transcription /tu/. What else do you look for whencommenting on phonology?
basically I have written a short story and now I have to comment on the phonology of it. I know phonology means studying the sound system of a language. e.g. onomatopoeia and alliteration. But the real question is what else do you look for when commenting on phonology apart from onomatopoeia and alliteration?
PHONOLOGY is the study of sounds and speech patterns in a language. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-i s-phonology.htm So aside from onomatopoeia and alliteration, you could also mention ASSONANCE and CONSONANCE.
what is the difference betweenautosegmental phonology, metrical phonology and featuregeometry?
all these are different types pf phonology, so is there a difference etween these three kinds in terms of structure?
Autosegmental is a non-linear approach tophonology that allows phonological processes, such as tone and vowel harmony, to be independent of and extend beyond individual consonants and vowels. Metrical phonology is phonologicalyconcerned with organizing segments into groups of relative prominence. \segments are organized syllables, syllables in metric feet, feet into phonological words, and words into larger units. Feature Geometry covers tones, for the purpose of brevity, we look almost exclusively at a tone is say Asian languages, particular Chinese languages and vietnamese. In short the pitch of a word can change the meaning of a word check out http://www.sil.org/glossaryofl inguisticterms Hope this is of some help to you.
