Evans, Philosophy: A Beginner's Guide (Blackwell Publishing, 1999), p. 1: "Philosophy is a study of problems which are ultimate, abstract and very general. These problems are concerned with the nature of existence, knowledge, morality, reason and human purpose."A.C. Grayling, Philosophy 1: A Guide through the Subject (Oxford University Press, 1998), p. 1: "The aim of philosophical inquiry is to gain insight into questions about knowledge, truth, reason, reality, meaning, mind, and value." Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing these questions (such as mysticism or mythology) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on reasoned argument.Anthony Quinton, in T. Honderich (ed.), The Oxford Companion to Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 1995), p. 666: "Philosophy is rationally critical thinking, of a more or less systematic kind about the general nature of the world (metaphysics or theory of existence), the justification of belief (epistemology or theory of knowledge), and the conduct of life (ethics or theory of value). Each of the three elements in this list has a non-philosophical counterpart, from which it is distinguished by its explicitly rational and critical way of proceeding and by its systematic nature. Everyone has some general conception of the nature of the world in which they live and of their place in it. Metaphysics replaces the unargued assumptions embodied in such a conception with a rational and organized body of beliefs about the world as a whole. Everyone has occasion to doubt and question beliefs, their own or those of others, with more or less success and without any theory of what they are doing. Epistemology seeks by argument to make explicit the rules of correct belief formation. Everyone governs their conduct by directing it to desired or valued ends. Ethics, or moral philosophy, in its most inclusive sense, seeks to articulate, in rationally systematic form, the rules or principles involved." Philosophy comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία [1], which literally translates to "love of wisdom". Philosophia, Henry George Liddell, Robert Scott, A Greek-English Lexicon, at Perseus Online Etymology DictionaryThe definition of philosophy is: "1.orig., love of, or the search for, wisdom or knowledge 2.theory or logical analysis of the principles underlying conduct, thought, knowledge, and the nature of the universe". Philosophy?
I would define philosophy as
"the use of thought to analyze
those matters not concrete
within a respective field. As
a matter of questioning the
abstract and attempting to
define such in terms generally
understood". What do you think
of this statement? How would
you define philosophy? Give
examples of philosophical
thought.
This is not homework. I am
simply interested in the way
which individuals view
philosophy and whether or not
my thinking itself is flawed.
The quote is of my own
thinking...

Your definition seems decent to me, but it may be too specific. The greek word "philosophy" breaks down into "philos," which is one of the words for love, and "sophia," a word for wisdom. So, quite literally, philosophy is just a pursuit or love for wisdom. Some of the above answers, as well as yours, encompass this. Furthermore, and generally speaking, typical philosophy is categorized into Metaphysics (theory of being,) Epistemology (theory of knowledge,) and Axiology (theory of value.) Generally, you'll find that most subjects in philosophy reduce to one of these general categories. |

What is your philosophy of I am trying to write a paper
for one of my classes, and am
having a hard time finding
information on the topic. Our
prof wants us to get others
philosophies of higher
education and evaluate them
and come up with our own.
However, when I search
"philosophy of higher
education" all I get is info
on PhD programs! So, if you
are a higher ed administrator
or an educator, what is your
philosophy of higher
education, or what is your
college's philosophy?
Also if you have any tips on
where to find this
information, or better ways to
search, please let me know!
Thanks for your help!

One reason why you may not be finding anything specifically on this topic is because it is subjective and interpretive. My opinion is that higher education is fine if it has a practical application. For instance, practicing law or becoming a doctor but there are many other professions where this could hamper the individual. From a professional aspect, the worst Engineers I have ever had on my staff or worked with me are PhD's. Their minds are developed in such an analytical manner that they become dysfunctional. Also, this is compounded by people who achieve degrees all in the same field i.e. engineering. I think it is great from a science perspective but from management or operatability it is useless. I would rather see an Engineer with an undergrad and MS or a MBA rather than a PhD anytime. To this day, I wont higher PhD because I have no use for them. |

What is the Philosophy video The series i'm thinking of is
available on Youtube. It
features brightly coloured
cartoon people that are
strange-looking and stylized.
As they talk, the images move
and shift. There is a few
movies, they all feature these
cartoons discussing philosophy
in everyday situations; in
bed, in a restaurant, etc.
Does anyone know what i'm
talking about?
Oh, i think it IS waking life.
Thanks!
