Definition
It is generally agreed that the word was coined 2500 years ago in ancient Greece, by the playwright Aeschylus, or whom ever else wrote Prometheus Bound (line 11). There the author told as a myth how the primitive creatures that were created to be human, at first had no knowledge, skills, or culture of any kind—so they lived in caves, in the dark, in constant fear for their lives. Zeus, the tyrannical king of the gods, decided to destroy them, but Prometheus, a Titan whose name meant “forethought,” out of his "philanthropos tropos" or “humanity-loving character” gave them two empowering, life-enhancing, gifts: fire, symbolizing all knowledge, skills, technology, arts, and science; and “blind hope” or optimism. The two went together—with fire, humans could be optimistic; with optimism, they could use fire constructively, to improve the human condition. Philanthropist?
I had a lot of time to think
last night when I couldn't
sleep. Here is another
question that I had...
I remember when I was a young
gal telling my mom that when I
grow up wanted to be a
philanthropist. I am sure she
was secretely laughing at me
thinking 'that's going to take
some bucks'! Yes, back then I
was pretty niave not knowing
that it does take money to be
a philanthropist.
But really? Can it be done?
Can I still be a
philanthropist without having
much money (none actually)!
How does one start an
organization where they
collect donations?
I really would like to know
because I would be interested
in something like this. I hate
to see all the money that is
donated go to the executives
in charge or spent
frivolously. I want to see
peoples efforts actually make
a difference.

No, you aren't naive in wanting to help others. This is a wonderful activity for you to desire. Starting out with a lot of money would certainly jump-start your philanthropic desires, but if news stories are to be believed, there are lots of people - even children - who decide that Something Needs To Be Done, and start in. Do some homework by looking up philanthropic groups online. Ask around your own area about fund-raising projects, get involved, and learn on the job. Help with church or community fund-raising just to see how it's done. There are plenty of needs in your own area, so when you find a project you want to support, ask local businesses to help. Find someone in your local newspaper office who is interested in writing up your project so you can thank your supporters. Businesses are more likely to help where their philanthropic actions are visible to the public. Talk, talk, talk about your project to anyone who will listen. Write about it to friends, relatives and online buddies. List it in your blog. You never know who will listen, take out a checkbook, and surprise you. Some people who can't or won't help you may talk to others about your project. Word spreads, you get others involved, and suddenly you are making a difference! Go for it! -- Bjo Trimble |

Who is the biggest Who will be known as the
biggest philanthropist in
wrestling history ?
A philanthropist is someone
who engages in philanthropy !!
A philanthropist is someone
who engages in philanthropy;
that is, someone who donates
his or her time, money, and/or
reputation to charitable
causes. The term may apply to
any volunteer or to anyone who
makes a donation, but the
label is most often applied to
those who donate large sums of
money or who make a major
impact through their
volunteering, such as a
trustee who manages a
philanthropic organization.
A philanthropist may not
always find universal approval
for his/her deeds. Common
accusations include supporting
an unworthy cause (such as
funding art instead of
fighting world hunger) or
having selfish motivation at
heart (such as avoiding taxes
or attaining personal fame).

I agree that Mick Foley does a lot of work also Lita, she is a strong advocate of animals. Also the Great Khali give a lot of money to people back in his home country, and literally he would be the BIGGEST philanthropist in history |

What's a word that's something I'm looking for a nice word,
to be used as a title, for
someone that is friendly,
chatty, willing to help
others. The preference is
toward the archaic/odd/fun.
Philanthropist is almost
workable, but the monetary
connotations won't work.
Socialite seems a little
negative to some people.
Gadfly is also too negative.
I'm looking for a single noun.
Thanks!

Amiable fellow. Likeable rogue. Footloose and fancy free. Gushing. A free spirit. A breath of fresh air. I do wish there were more of them in the world! |
