...ParaplegiaFrom Ionic Greek: παραπληγίη "half-striking". is an impairment in motor and/or sensory function of the lower extremities. It is usually the result of spinal cord injury or a congenital condition such as spina bifida which affects the neural elements of the spinal canal. The area of the spinal canal which is affected in paraplegia is either the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions. If the arms are also affected by paralysis, tetraplegia is the proper terminology. My mother and I and 2 siblings all have (correct spelling) familial spastic paraplegia. My maternal Grandmother also had it. My mother is in a chair and I wear orthotics. My eldest sister has the disease the worst of any of the offspring. As a child my mother used canes to walk, it has now progressed to the point that she uses a wheelchair most all the time. i.e. she does not use it to shower and can stand for minimal time. She still drives but has difficulty lifting her feet to do so. If you haev questions please feel free to contact me. I will answer any questions I can. |

is sudden onset paraplegia a Yesterday morning, I woke up
and could not feel my toes or
move them or my ankles or my
calve muscles. I had to use my
upper body to drag myself
along the floor to get to my
phone. I called my mom. I am
on a new medication, Paxil,
and I have taken some benadryl
the night before. I have lost
my appetite, feel very
lethargic, have a slight
headache, and an overall
feeling of malise. Should I
wait a little while longer
before calling the ambulance?
Please help. Thanks.

If you completely can't move your legs it is an emergency. Every minute you wait increases the risk of the paraplegia becoming permanent or having significant loss of function if you do recover. |

I'm sorry for what you've had to undergo. I broke my back (L1, L3 & L4) several years ago in an auto accident. As a result, I had burning sensations in my lower back & leg. I know it's not a natural or alternative therapy, but my Doctor prescribed a medicine called Elavil or amytriptoline that blocks out that burning sensation. I was on that for several years & then switched over to another medicine called Neurontin which also blocks nerve damage pain. Good luck. |
