...Paganism (from Latin paganus, meaning "country dweller", "rustic")http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_/pagan.html is a blanket term used to refer to various non Judeo-Christian religions, however there are various differing definitions as to what religions can actually be defined as being paganism, with no consensus as to which is correct.http://www.religioustolerance.org/paganism.htm - Robinson, B.A (2000). "What do "Paganism" & "Pagan" mean?" at religioustolerance.org One group maintains paganism as a term that includes all non-Abrahamic religions. Another holds that paganism should refer solely to polytheistic religions, and the group so defined includes most of the Eastern religions, Native American religions and mythologies, as well as non-Abrahamic folk religions in general. More narrow definitions will not include any of the world religions and restrict the term to local or rural currents not organized as civil religions. Characteristic of pagan traditions is the absence of proselytism and the presence of a living mythology which explains religious practice."And it Harms No-one", A Pagan Manifesto, Janet Farrar & Gavin Bone, 1998.[1] Read full entry

What is the difference between What is the difference between
a witch, a wiccan, and a
pagan?
I think I have a general idea
but could someone maybe
explain it to me in depth so I
can understand?

First a Generalisation, the Overall Spirituality of Neo-Paganism (life affirming "Old World" Indigenous Spiritualities) and Wicca is ONE of the many faiths covered by this label. Those attracted to this Path are usually strongly independent personalities and the personal preference to which label they use is just as independent. So usage of "Witch", "Pagan" & "Wiccan" come down to personal choice. For example, not all "Witches" (within the Neo-pagan context) are Wiccans, not all Wiccans feel conformable with the "Witch" label. While others prefer a generic "pagan" label to describe their Spirituality. This recognises that "Witch" has many other definitions depending on the context in which it is used. . |

Pagans: How should pagan I asked a similar question to
this, and got some very good
answers, but I also got quite
a few Christian answers. So,
for pagans, how do you or how
would you handle children's
questions about Hell and
Christianity from a pagan
point of view without lying
about it or entering in your
own opinions, or forcing the
conversation too dark for
children?

I would simply explain that everyone has different beliefs, and maybe explain a bit about the Christian faith as well. I would encourage my child to keep an open mind, and if he wished to explore the Christian faith a bit more, I would give him the freedom to do so. My parents did the same for me. They always encouraged me to keep an open mind, and they gave me the freedom to explore whatever religion I chose. They fully supported me when I told them that I was Pagan. Why should I not the the same for my child? |

First, you are going to find that such beliefs will commonly be more personal beliefs than they will be specifically pagan. Many pagan paths don't claim to know what is unknowable to living humans and dictate what they are to believe and not to believe. This Wiccan doesn't believe in calling spirits supernatural. Death is a very natural part of life. It is a scientific fact that our bodies have energy within them. Some people believe this to be the spirit, or the soul, and that energy has to go somewhere when the physical body dies. I believe that our souls have a choice - when our body dies, if our soul chooses to remain tied to the physical world, that they are able to linger (and to a point interact, this is what people refer to as ghosts), or we can go into the light - cross over to the next plane of existence. I don't believe this is a plane where our soul is judged by another and we are either rewarded or punished for our lives...but rather I lean toward the belief that we each create our own "afterlife" based on what we truly believed and how we really felt about ourselves in this life (kind of like in the movie "What Dreams May Come".) I believe that those of us who feel we are worthy and at peace with ourselves after we die, rest and reflect for a time in a pleasant place or state of being (call it Heaven, The Summerland, whatever), and that we eventually are reincarnated. Perhaps we are continuously reincarnated. Perhaps we are only reincarnated until we have learned all the lessons we are capable of from the physical world and we then ascend to a higher spiritual plane. Whatever my soul's fate may be, it's inevitable that we all will die some day, so I try to place more focus on living my life to the fullest and being the best person I can be rather than dwelling on what may or may not happen upon my body's death. |
