Noun
- An allotrope of oxygen (symbol O3) having three atoms in the molecule instead of the usual two; it is a blue gas, generated from oxygen by electrical discharge; it is poisonous and highly reactive, but in the upper atmosphere it protects life on Earth from ultraviolet radiation.
- (informally but erroneously) Fresh air, especially that breathed at the seaside and smelling of seaweed.

...Ozone (O3) is a triatomic molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms. It is an allotrope of oxygen that is much less stable than the diatomic O2. Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant with harmful effects on the respiratory systems of animals. The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere filters potentially damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth's surface. It is present in low concentrations throughout the Earth's atmosphere. It has many industrial and consumer applications. Read full entry

ozone.......?
do you think if everyone in
the world held their breath
for 10 seconds it would help
change the ozone????
|
|
![]() |
No, because after that breath hold, everyone would do larger recovery breaths and it would all be the same. Not to mention that people don't breath ozone, nor do they expel it. |

What can you do to stop ozone Well, we all know the
environmental crisis what with
fighting climate change,
global warming, and, in
relation, the thinning of the
ozone layer and the ozone
"hole". My question is,
basically, how or what are the
different ways of tackling
this situation. And as
ordinary citizens, what would
you do to make a difference
and try to congest this
pollution and ozone thinning
from continuing furthermore?

Well the atmosphere is a constantly changing environment itself, so there is no real way to completely halt any change that may happen to it. However, human beings could work more at conserving their environment and living with sustainable means instead of industrializing everything and expending so much carbon waste into the air. It is vital in this to plant more trees and to reserve greater areas of land to allow for plant growth and carbon uptake. 1 square meter of grassland can intake and store 600 grams of carbon per year and 1 square meter of forest can intake and store 1,200 grams of carbon per year. As an example, my own college campus features a 4,843 car lot, 31 acres of restored tall grass prairie and 93 acres of forest. That equals over 1,333,000 and 3,999,000 square feet of both prairie and forest respectively which can store around 1,162,036 pounds (527090663.26532 grams) of carbon per year. Even if each car in the lot burns a mere 12 gallons of gasoline per week, the cars still burn 58,116 gallons of gas total and 1,162,320 pounds of CO2 emissions. The numbers may look comparable, but let me remind you that those CO2 emissions are only the subject on one week whereas the carbon stored by the natural acreage is a full year's measurement. It's very obvious that the vast majority of us are living outside our means in carbon emissions and are greatly contributing to climate change. If everyone on the planet decided to stop driving their vehicles and stop burning fossil fuels for energy as a whole and plant new trees and plants we MIGHT see a turnaround in our environment. Personally, I don't see that happening anytime soon. The human population could also cut meat out of their diet entirely and turn entirely to vegetative diets. As energy flows through one organism into the next, only ten percent of the energy is actually retained. Therefore, eating the corn which fed the livestock is a much more efficient way to feed a population and helps us move away from our carrying capacity. Remember that the phenomenon of human beings is a very new one and we easily outnumber any other organisms in a comparable trophic level. As long as we strive for expansion, we cannot live sustainable lives in conjunction with our environment and we will forever be fighting with nature's own balancing act. |

Is is safe to use an ozone We have some smoke damage
(from a fire) to an apartment,
and would like to use an ozone
generator to remove the smoke
smell. Will the use of the
ozone generator in a room with
a fishtank do any damage to
the fish?
From my understanding of ozone
generators, they create O3-
will this "pollute" the water
in the fishtank? Or create an
unsafe environment for the
fish?
Thank you in advance for your
assistance!

The generator should be OK with the fish tank,a few years back there were filters with primitive Ozone generators in them,(they didn't work too well) that didn't harm the fish.Sorry about the smoke damage.------Good luck.------PeeTee |
