...An oxide is a chemical compound containing at least one oxygen atom as well as at least one other element. Most of the Earth's crust consists of oxides. Oxides result when elements are oxidized by oxygen in air. Combustion of hydrocarbons affords the two principal oxides of carbon, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Even materials that are considered to be pure elements often contain a coating of oxides. For example, aluminium foil has a thin skin of Al2O3 that protects the foil from further corrosion. What is the difference in There are some compounds that
end in 'hydroxide', for
example, calcium hydroxide, or
sodium hydroxide. But there
are also compounds that end in
'oxide' such as copper oxide.
So what is the difference
between the compounds ending
in 'hydroxide' and the ones
ending in 'oxide'?

hyrdroxide = hydrogen and oxygen -OH oxide = is just oxygen plus an element |

How do you measure how much I know that if you put a dirty
penny into a acid liquid,
copper oxide dissolves. After
that, how are you suppose to
measure how much copper oxide
is left on the penny?

Cillit bang! Now, get a really really pricise scale, weigh the coin before, put exactly half of it in the substance, weight it again take it away from each other, double it, and thats how much copper oxide there was on the coin. |

What produces excess nitrous I took my '93 Camry for an "E"
check and was told that it
didn't pass because the
nitrous oxide level was too
high. So, I need to know what
this means. Do I just need to
change out some fluids or
spark plugs?

Hi Sweetpea, I'm guessing that you (or the person who told you) means Nitrogen Oxide otherwise known as NOx. You engine will generate a little of this as it is running normally, however there are a few possible causes when it is excessive. Causes could include one or more of the following....... Lean Air/Fuel mixture Excessively high combustion temperture and/or incorrect engine timing. There are various possible causes of these faults, from a leaking inlet bellows to a head gasket starting to fail. My advice would be to get a tune up/service and explain the situation to the garage/mechanic. Good luck, Pyth |
