What was the military One empire that has eluded my
understanding is the Ottoman
Empire. I know they conquered
Constantinople, but why? What
military power did they bring
to the table allowing them to
conquer a huge empire from
Europe to Africa? Did they any
special advantage? Or was just
brute force?

The innovations in using gun powered, & the Janissaries. When they conquered Constantinople, they used huge peaces of artillery. At that time, Byzantium wasn’t the huge empire it used to be, but Constantinople was well fortified. Sultan Mehmed II orchestrated the conquest of Constantinople with several innovations. In addition to the artillery, he managed to move 70 ships over the mountains to attack the city from 2 directions. The Janissaries were technically the slaves of the Sultans. They were taking at a young age & given some of the best education & training in the world of their time. They grow to become the Sultans elite infantry. & they were a formidable force. |
