Good vs. Great and Otto Von I am writing an essay on Otto
von Bismarck and in this essay
I must describe the character
of Bismarck. Whether he was a
good man...with that I need to
find a standard against which
to measure him. So any help,
either with the Bismarck part
or a measure of goodness vs.
greatness. Quotes for the
goodness vs. greatness would
help.
Thank you much

he achieved great things - uniting the disparate parts of Germany. you could try comparing him with Garibaldi - who at a not completely different time was one of the driving forces behind a united italy |

Otto von Bismark said that the settled by Blood and Iron. He
proved to be right so many
times in the second half of
the 19th Century. Seeing this
as a political maxim, which
candidate do you believe has
the will to do what it takes
to settle these great
questions?
This Maxim was applied by both
sides. Britain had no just
right in either to declare war
on Germany. She did it to
defend her empire - not out of
goodness.
Bismark did nothing that the
three Kaisers he served under
did not approve. He defeated
Denmark, Austria and France in
war, unified his people and
created the German Empire.

Germany employed that maxim and lost two world wars. Edit - Britain declared war due to treaty obligations to defend Belgian neutrality in the first war and Polish sovereignty in the second - it wasn't a matter of choice but the fulfillment of a moral obligation. |
