What other diseases can beacquired by getting addictedto alcohol?
Harry, my lab partner, is an alcoholic. He doesn't want to admit it but he is an alcoholic. Alcohol is like his daily vitamins or something. He drinks whenever he can... even before going to class! I'm really worried about him and I want to help him overcome his alcoholism. I'm also scared that he might develop other diseases just because of his bad drinking habits. I can't get through a day in chem without him. Please help me.
Are you in love with you lab partner? I'm just kidding. Anyway, there are certain diseases which may be developed because of alcoholism. Some of these are Wernicke's Encephalopathy, Korsakoff's syndrome, cirrhosis, fetal alcohol syndrome (for babies with drinking mothers), liver diseases and even cancer. Alcoholics have difficulties in coordination, reflexes, concentration, judgment and sleeping. Other effects of alcoholism include distorted vision, memory lapses and blackouts.
How can I help children withcancer or other diseases?
I want to find a career to help children with cancer and other impairments/diseases. It absolutely kills me to see kids in pain. I donate my hair to "Locks of Love", but that's just a little thing. What kind of career can I find to help them? I don't want to be a nurse. That's for sure. What could I do?
If you are not interested in the medical field (nursing or doctor) than you might concentrate on being a Medical Social Worker or a Childlife specialist. The majority of pediatric Cancer Clinics have medical social workers who meet with children and parents during treatment. They often accompany the oncologist if there is a new patient or bad news. They counsel children and their families, as well as visit schools to educate the community about a child with cancer. They help finding financial resources and are available at all times to help with the emotional and social issues that affect children with cancer. The Association of Pediatric Oncology Social Workers http://www.aposw.org/ Childlife Specialist http://www.uwec.edu/Career/Stu dents/explore/Profiles/child%2 0life%20specialist.htm You could also consider being a teacher/educator for children who are hospitalized. My son had a teacher who worked on the oncology floor and was able to keep him on task . .some of the time. The teacher collaborates with the local school system to keep the patient up with their studies. His teacher at the hospital was so wonderful, kind, and understood exactly how overwhelming school can be while a child is fighting cancer. Anyway, those are some possibilities to consider. Best of luck!
Why did the Europeans bringdiseases to the New World butnot the other way around?
I always read that european bought diseases that killed off massive numbers of native americans, but what about the other way around? did the native americans had something in store in terms of diseases for the settlers?
According to the PBS series "Guns, Germs, and Steel" based on the book by the same name, Euros had been exposed to diseases borne of large animals like cattle, sheep, and pigs by living in the same house with them. All the major diseases of mankind, like measles, smallpox, etc. are from animals. For centuries Europeans kept their livestock safe by bringing them into the house at night and actually sleeping with the animals. (Really! No joke!) Most Euros homes had one "great" room and all family members, including livestock slept there. The various germs and viruses were then introduced to the human by contact and close proximity to the animals. The Natives of the New World, though, had NO tradition of sleeping with, or living so closely with large animals. The largest animal the New World natives domesticated was the llama of South America, and the natives there NEVER slept with the animals; they didn't even enter the same house as the humans! The New World natives, therefore had no exposure to, or immunity to the diseases associated with large animals and when they got exposure (from the Euros) the diseases did more than decimate the natives; they annihilated them.
