...Oriental Orthodoxy is the communion of Eastern Christian Churches that recognize only three ecumenical councils — the First Council of Nicaea, the First Council of Constantinople and the Council of Ephesus. They rejected the dogmatic definitions of the Council of Chalcedon (451). Hence, these Oriental Orthodox Churches are also called Old Oriental Churches or Non-Chalcedonian Churches. These churches are generally not in communion with Eastern Orthodox Churches with whom they are in dialogue for a return to unity. In the beginning...from the time of the Biblical book of Acts and the birth of the Christian church there was basically one church with several major bishops, the Bishops of Rome, Constantinopole, Alexandria, Ephesus, Antioch. There were always heresies to combat and potential splits to avert because the church is made up of fallible, imperfect people like us. The major split between the Eastern and Western Church occurred in 1054 with two major theological issues: the Pope's authority (as THE POPE rather than as one among a group of ruling bishops) and the "filoque", the section of the Nicene Creed in which the Eastern church holds that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Western Church maintains that the Holy spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son. The issues are not as important as the broken relationship. In the 20th century there have been steps taken towards unity between Roman Catholic and Oriental Orthodox leaders: the following is an excerpt from the common declaration of leaders of both faiths: “ In words and life we confess the true doctrine concerning Christ our Lord, notwithstanding the differences in interpretation of such a doctrine which arose at the time of the Council of Chalcedon." From the common declaration of Pope John Paul II and HH Mar Ignatius Zakka I I was, June 23, 1984 Protestants are actually split off from the Western (Roman) Catholics-this happened during the Reformation of the 1500's with Luther, Calvin and others. Oriental Orthodox Christians were cut off from the west and did not experience the Protestant reformation. PLEASE NOTE: The liturgies used by Oriental Orthodox churches date back to St. James (the brother of Jesus) the first bishop of Jerusalem. They are beautiful and if you can hear them transliterated into modern English while still retaining the flavor of the original language you are lucky! The priest at St. Helena's in Leona Valley-Fr. Jim Colburn does a great job of putting these beautiful liturgies into meaningful, reverent, modern English. Hope that this helps! |
