Ordination?
I know what Catholic Priests
and Rabbis have to do before
Ordination. What do Pastors,
Ministers, Reverends and the
like need to do? Basically
what are their credentials?

It depends on the organization or denomination. Some churches ordain their own ministers, with the only credential being a "call." Most mainline denominations require a Master's of Divinity, or other Master's equivalent, which is granted by seminaries. Again, mainline denominations (Disciples, Methodists, Presbyterians, etc...) have accredited seminaries. |

How do you feel about online What are your feelings on
these churches that offer
free, almost instant
ordination online with no
study, dedication or
experience necessary? Please
don't quote religious texts or
go on a long rant. just
looking for your personal
opinion. Do you think its a
good/bad thing? why?

It has its uses. I got ordained online when some friends wanted me to perform a wedding for them. Then I got it legalized with the state. Now I perform weddings and funerals. I don't see what the problem is. I'm not harming anyone, telling them what to believe, or bilking them out of money. |

how did the protestant it is my understanding that
ordination begins with others
that are ordained imparting
the ordination unto you. well,
if that's the case, then how
did it start with protestants?
was it just started by
ordained catholics or
something and they continued
to impart the ordination?

Realize that the Protestant movement was started by Catholics or former Catholics, many of whom where clerics of the Catholic church. I would assume that these clerics in turn imparted ordination to others as the need/occasion arose. In most Protestant churches, ordination is the rite by which the Church * recognizes and confirms that an individual's has been called by God to the ministry of Word and Sacrament, * acknowledges that the individual has gone through a period of discernment and training related to this call, and * authorizes that individual to take on the office of ministry. For the sake of authorization and church order (and not for reason of 'powers' or 'ability'), individuals in most mainline Protestant churches must be ordained in order to preside at the sacraments (Baptism and Holy Communion) and to be installed as a called pastor of a congregation/parish. |
