It may be for audio, and if your TV does not have an "optical in" for the input you have chosen, maybe you can feed it to a receiver for kick @$$ audio. The small square with a notch input/ output optical is usually reserved for audio.

What is the relationshipbetween optical lenses and thedigital optical ranges?
I have a HP Photosmart 945 with an 8x optical and 7x digital zoom. I am considering a Canon Rebel for a replacement and want to know what lens I would need to meet or exceed the range of the my current camera.
Firstly, you can disregard any importance in using digital zoom. The HP 945 has an optical focal length equivalent of 37mm-300mm. So, you will need a lens with a focal length in that range or more. You might have to buy at least two lenses to achieve that, though. I have provided you with some links that may be helpful...
Is 10x optical zoom goodenough to take pictures at afootball game or should i gostronger?
I am going to an nfl game and sitting at the lower level. I want to take great pictures and wondering if i should go with a 10x optical zoom or kick out a little extra for a 12x optical zoom. Is there even a significant difference in zoom power. i am either going to get Panasonic DMC-FZ8S Lumix 7 or Panasonic DMC-TZ3K 7.2. I am leaning towards the smaller one because it seems easier to carry but the larger one has more optical zoom. Also i am worried about scratching the lens on the bigger one because it doesn't automatically shut the lens when it's off in comparrison to the smaller one. I have no idea what to do. please help. Any suggestions on this topic would be appreciated.
I would guess if you're sitting at the lower level then you'll be fine with a 10x zoom. I don't think a 12x zoom would hurt either - but since you mention the size would be larger you need to make sure that a professional looking (or a semipro to say the least) are allowed in such venue. However since there's less light entering your camera on a high zoom level, you're gonna have to compensate with slower shutter speed and therefore it is advisable to bring a tripod along. Good luck!
