Just wondering if anyone has I really want to get my
nursing degree, but don't have
the time right now to be in a
time commitment in a
traditional class-room
setting. I'm hoping someone
has had luck with an online
program.
Thanks for the advice!! There
is a university in my state
that is going to put their RN
online this fall, so I'll wait
for that. It;s just 15 months
or so, and I already have a
medical background and have
had a few of the necessary
classes, so it won't be too
bad. The worst part is
reminding myself that I can do
this and that I don't have all
the symptoms of things I read
about!!

I'm not to sure where you are from, but in Australia we have University based and correspondence or distance education which also involves blocks of prac. (In a hospital or health care facility). You will find it difficult unless you are going in as a mature age student, if you have some recent nursing, study experience and discipline. I originally trained as an Enrolled Nurse (level before Registered Nurse) in a hospital setting and then some 9 yrs later went back to uni as a mature age student full time. I found it hard for the first 6 months getting back into study but I had a significant advantage with my nursing experiences. My concern with the "on line" or correspondence (horrorspondence) training is the lack of hands on experience it offers. I know some of the girls/guys I went to uni struggled to put into practice what they were learning out of a book. Remember you are dealing with people and often at the most vulnerable times in their lives so you really need to experience it one on one. I think on line would be even more difficult as you often do not have access to colleagues, friends and other sources to bounce ideas and thoughts off. In particular it is good to be around others that have nursing/medical experience so you can pick their brains, I was still working part time whilst at uni and found it extremely valuable. You can be assured that the workload will be high. If your disciplined you could certainly pick off a few subjects until you can devote yourself more fully. Hope this is of some help and good luck. It is a very rewarding career but also a lot of hard work, the learning and experience continue every day |

What do you think of Excelsior I am thinking of attending the
online program for my nursing
degree.
There is a two year waiting
list for schools in my area. I
rather not wait to go to
school

i know someone who is enrolled in it. they received their RN in like 6 months, and now has a great job. this type of program is far better than an on site campus just for the fact that if you have a life, or family it is flexible to your needs not just the needs of the school. plus they do have an excellent customer service system, they dont hassle you when you call, they make every attempt to solve your problem that you may be having and they are very informative. again if you have a life, or kids especially go for it. the only downfall is the price. but when you look at it you will pay about the same amount in the end. just sign up for the online degree program, they have quite a few selections, the nursing field is defiantely one to get into. a lot of hospitals now a days give excellent sign on bonuses for RN's in my area, depending on the hospital, you can get anywhere from a 5,000-15,000 sign on bonus along with the fact that many hospitals also are very willing to pay up to 80% of tuition. the only downfall is online scholorships and grants are a bit harder to get. but very worth it. |

Should I enroll in Excelsior I'm currently a military
corspman and eligible for the
Excelsior online nursing
program, I spoke with a local
nursing program and they said
I completed 40/60 pre-reqs for
their accelerated BSN program.
Is better to finish with
excelsior(Have already been
accepted with them) or try an
traditional nursing program?

The traditional program. The Nursing Boards in California, Kansas and Illinois do not accept Excelsior. That should tell you something right there. |
