How long does it take to get I have been married for 2
years and 8 months with my NZ
partner whom has ILR. We are
planning to migrate to Oz but
I want my partner to get the
British passport prior we
travel. Does anybody know
after doing the test "Life in
the UK" what is the next step
and how long in total will it
take? (Naturalisation and
Getting Passport) Any idea of
the fees??

The fees are ricidulous but if you check out the Home Office website you can find all the information you need. After taking and passing the test, you need to apply to the Home Office for citizenship and this can take several weeks to several months depending on the backlog. http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov. uk/ |

You can apply for citizenship if you have been living in the UK with no limits on your right to remain (ie you have indefinite leave to remain) for 5 years or 3 years if you are married to a British citizen. You need to pass a citizenship test and have a certificate from that. You will also need to send your passport, other form of ID such as a bank statement, spouses passport and the marriage certificate if relevant, the citizenship test certificate, and any other paperwork which may be specific to your case. You need character references from two people who you have known for over three years, and these must not be related to you. The website is actually very helpful and all the information is there. You probably need Form and Guidance AN. www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk is where to look. If you've applied for indefinite leave to remain before, it's no harder than that. Best wishes |
