What type of camera did Robert Robert Flaherty filmed "Nanook
of the North" in 1919-1920. It
has been called the first
feature-length documentary.
Anyone know what types of
cameras were available then,
even if not which one(s) were
specifically used for the
film? I know sync-sound was
not yet available, but I'd
like specifics. Any info
appreciated. Thanks!

This is not fully a documentary, since Robert J. Flaherty had to forcefully put in some staged elements. Also the characters in the movie did not really live that way as seen in this movie, and they weren't even related in fact, just put together for this movie. Nevertheless the movie still gives a interesting and detailed look into the lives of the Inuit people. You also have to watch this movie in perspective, back in 1922, really nobody was really familiar with how people lived on the Artic. In that regard "Nanook of the North" is a really insightful and interesting movie for its time, that I bet was watched with great interested at the time of its release. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt00 13427/ |
