NASA was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act on July 29, 1958, replacing its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The agency became operational on October 1, 1958. NASA has led U.S. efforts for space exploration ever since, resulting in the Apollo missions to the Moon, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle. Currently NASA is supporting the International Space Station and developing new Ares I and V launch vehicles. Read full entry

nasa????????
in el paso texas, by the nasa
facility here, there is a huge
like silver looking plane.
it looks like a big goldfish,
but silver.
or like a blimp with little
fins in back.
what is it?
like the name of the plane?

I know the plane you're talking about, but I'm unable to remember what they call it, or just what it was used for. It was special built to transport something or other, but that's all I can recall. Still on my first cup of coffee here. Okay, the word 'guppy' drifted through my morning fog, and I googled it. Check the link below, I think that's your plane. |

What is nasa gonna replace the I heard that nasa is gonna
retire the entire fleet of
space shuttles soon but what
is nasa gonna replace them
with? Is nasa gonna replace
the shuttles with something
new immediately or in a few
years time which means that
men can't go to space during
that time except for Russia.

OK, the shuttle is due to be retired by the end of next year. The replacement is much more like the old apollo rocket and capsule way of doing things. Space planes are out of fashion at the moment. The Project to come up with a replacement is called Constellation The Crewed Vehicle will be called Orion The Rocket designed specifically to launch this is called the Ares I. The whole shebang is meant to be ready to go by 2014 leaving 4 years with no way for the US to get astronauts into space other than through commercial means. And yeah, that mainly means Russia. There'll still be American astronauts in that time, but they'll fly on Russian rockets. Worries about time and cost overruns are prompting the rethink. Plus the whole project is designed to fuflil the back to the moon requirements. That's Dubya legacy project, and to be hosect looks pretty pointless. It suck's up a lot of NASA funding and prevents a lot of other projects from going ahead. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/803 9835.stm |

How does NASA get funding for NASA spends millions on their
missions, but how do they come
up with all that money? Me and
most people couldn't come up
with millions from what seems
like thin air. So how do they
do it?

It's call budget appropriation. Congress gives them the money, which is collected from the taxpayers, at least until the current lot got in, and they just print money without any backing, which will ultimately ruin the dollar. |
